Size

Sizes are based on the suggested values given in the breed's standards. Weight is considered to be that of a dog in ideal weight for its bone structure; that is, neither thin nor fat. Dogs weight ranges from 2 pounds to 190 pounds. Average values within a breed may differ from suggested values.
In general, females are smaller than males.

Note that living space that a breed can comfortably tolerate (with regular exercise of course) is not dependent on size alone. Even large dogs can be happy in smaller living spaces provided that they get sufficient exercise and activisation. It is very difficult to provide an accurate estimate of how large the living space ideally should be for the dog to be happy. If you spend four hours a day activating and exercising your large, active dog it might be quite happy in an apartment. In fact, some larger dogs are very calm and relaxed and might require less space that a smaller, active breed. But if you are considering a large St.Bernard for you small one bedroom apartment, do reconsider!

Our size ranges:

  • Tiny (up to about 10 pounds/5kg)
  • Small (approx. 10-20 pounds/5-10 kg)
  • Medium (approx. 20-40 pounds/10-20kg)
  • Large (approx. 40-100 pounds/20-50kg)
  • Giant (approx. 100 pounds/50 kg and more)
